Seven jobs, all done at the vehicle

New tyres and punctures are most of the work. Locking nuts, run-flats, vans, flat batteries and recovery make up the rest.

How a callout runs

Four steps, always in this order

  1. You describe the job

    The size off the sidewall if you can read it, what went wrong, and where the vehicle is standing.

  2. A figure is agreed

    One price for the tyre and the fitting. If a repair is not safe, you are told before anything is booked.

  3. The van comes to it

    The driver checks the size again at the wheel before anything comes off the car.

  4. Fitted and set

    Balanced, torqued to the car and the pressures set. A tyre monitor is reset where the car has one.

The ground

Portsmouth is an island with three roads on and off. A job on it starts with which one you came in by.

Cosham, on the mainland under Portsdown Hill, is where the work is pinned. There is no second site in Fareham or Gosport and no office anywhere else. Drivers move across the callouts; they do not sit in branches.

Do you come onto Portsea Island?

Yes. Portsmouth is the home ground. The island has three roads on: the M275, the A3 at Portsbridge, and Eastern Road. The van uses all three. Gosport is a separate peninsula, usually by road, sometimes after the ferry if that is where the vehicle already sits.

Is there a workshop I should drive to?

No. There is no depot in Cosham, Fareham, Gosport or anywhere else. The work is done where the vehicle is parked. If it will not roll, that becomes a recovery job.

Can a puncture be repaired?

When the hole is in the central tread and small enough, yes. A sidewall injury is a new tyre. You are told which it is before any fitting starts. A tyre that has been driven a long way while flat may already be finished on the inside.

What if the locking wheel nut key is missing?

The nut can still come off with the right kit. Say the make of the car and whether the wheels are alloy. Rounding the nut on a cheap socket is how alloys get ruined; that is not how this is done.
